Fischer's E-Verify Legislation Passes Unanimously Out of Committee
COLUMBUS— Representative Tex Fischer (R-Boardman) announces the unanimous passage of HB 246, legislation to require employers, specifically in the construction sector, to use the E-Verify program, out of the House Commerce and Labor Committee Wednesday.
The bill works to make sure all workers hired in Ohio for covered construction projects are legally authorized to work in the United States.
“I’m proud to see unanimous support for this common-sense legislation that strengthens the integrity of our workforce and protects taxpayer dollars,” said Rep. Fischer. “E-verify will help ensure that Ohio jobs are filled by Ohio workers, not illegal immigrants or individuals not authorized to work in our country.”
Under the proposed legislation, all contractors and subcontractors working on public works construction projects for state agencies and political subdivisions must use E-Verify to confirm the employment eligibility of their workforce.
The same requirement applies to private-sector contractors and subcontractors involved in non-residential construction projects, excluding single-, double-, or triple-family residential construction and agricultural construction as defined in Chapter 3781 of the Ohio Revised Code.
