COLUMBUS – The Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 230 on Wednesday in a unanimous vote of support. The bill will examine the states information technology systems to improve efficiency, reduce fraud, and protect personal data.

House Bill 230, introduced by State Representatives Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth) and Thomas Hall (R-Madison Township), requires the state of Ohio to modernize, centralize, and enhance its IT Systems. The bill will contract out a comprehensive IT study to identify problem areas for the state’s current technology infrastructure and implement next steps to bring the state up to par with best industry standards.

“Our systems need reform,” Said Ray. “We need to provide our agencies with the capability to operate at the most effective and efficient pace possible o get our constituents the help they need. Today, we made significant progress toward achieving that goal.”

The bill also addresses issues of fraud in state government by creating the Cyber Security and Fraud Advisory Board. The board consists of leading industry experts to oversee new information technology systems and apply best practices to prevent data breaches and address vulnerabilities to fraud.

“House Bill 230 will not only modernize Ohio’s IT systems, but will also save taxpayer dollars and improve our government’s accessibility in the process,” said Hall.

The bill now heads to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
