Reps. McNally, Lampton Introduce Bill to Promote Veterans Benefits on Posters
COLUMBUS – State Reps. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) and Brian Lampton (R-Beavercreek) Monday announced the introduction of a new piece of bipartisan legislation meant to bring awareness of programs for veterans, allowing certain employers to display an informational poster regarding benefits and services offered for veterans.
“I truly believe that knowledge is power. I want all people, but especially our veterans, to be set up for success and know about the resources available to them,” said Rep. McNally. “We know that time after serving can be tough for some, and knowing how to get help and what help is available can be life changing. I’m proud to do my part to give back to those who give so much to our country.”
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides numerous benefits to ensure veterans receive the support that they need to succeed when leaving the military. This bill would require the U.S. Department of Commerce, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Veterans Services, to create these posters free of charge for employers so that they will be placed in an accessible location to all employees.
“For our veterans who made the selfless decision to serve, the least we can do is to help make sure they are aware of the resources available to them. I believe these posters can make a difference for veterans by helping them get the support that they need,” said Rep. Lampton.
The supportive resources listed on the poster include, but are not limited to:
- Programs provided by the Department of Veterans services;
- Veterans Administration (VA) Crisis Line;
- Veteran-focused assistance with substance abuse and mental health treatment programs;
- Education, workforce, and training resources;
- Tax benefits and exemptions; and
- Legal services available.
The bill’s goal is to ensure that veterans are aware of and take advantage of programs and resources. This bill has a companion bill, Senate Bill 39, which was passed unanimously by the Ohio Senate.
