COLUMBUS – State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) today announced $2,666,424 for Mahoning County’s Western Reserve Transit Authority and $1,579,008 for the Community Action Agency of Columbiana County as part of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Office of Transit’s efforts to support Ohio’s public transportation.

“Public transportation is vital to the basic functioning of our communities,” said Rep. McNally, “This funding will help to ensure people will continue to have access to reliable, affordable transit.”

A total of seven grant programs will be awarding $106 million to a total of 383 transit projects across the state. The funding uses a combination of Federal Flex Funds and state funding from Ohio’s General Revenue Fund. The grant programs assist with a number of issues relevant to public transit, including:

·       Transport to economically significant employment centers

·       The purchase of buses

·       Specialized transportation for seniors and people with special needs

·       Expanding public transit in rural areas.

The Western Reserve Transit Authority and the Community Action Agency of Columbiana County serve as mass transit operators in their respective counties. The investments will go towards an expanded office for the Western Reserve Transit Authority, maintenance, the purchase of additional vehicles, new technology, and a handful of other initiatives.
