COLUMBUS – State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) today announced that Poland Township in Mahoning County has been awarded $935K from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) through the state’s Highway Safety Improvement Program. The grant will fund a pedestrian safety project that fills sidewalk gaps along SR 170, improving accessibility and safety for families and students in the area.

“Whether you’re behind the wheel, walking to school, or just out in your neighborhood, every resident deserves to feel safe,” said Rep. McNally. “This investment brings us closer to that goal and helps build a safer future for our community.”

Poland’s project is one of 55 traffic safety projects across 41 counties selected to receive a share of $137.5M in state funding. Governor Mike DeWine and ODOT announced the awards last week, emphasizing the state’s commitment to roadway safety.

Of the 55 projects funded, 22 directly address pedestrian safety, including sidewalk and crosswalk improvements. These targeted investments are part of Ohio’s nation-leading effort to reduce traffic fatalities, particularly pedestrian deaths, which have been declining since 2021.
