Rep. McNally Announces $1M to YMCA for Brownfield Remediation

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) today announced that The Ohio Department of Development (DOD) awarded $1M to the YMCA of Youngstown. This grant will be used complete asbestos abatement, universal waste removal, selective demolition, and infrastructure upgrades in portions of the historic downtown Youngstown YMCA. Once renovated, the upper floors and basement will be redeveloped into transitional housing for young people transitioning out of foster care and a youth development center.

“This is an exciting investment in a historic building, Youngstown, and the youth that these projects will serve. I have learned about this project directly from YMCA and I am so excited to see this project completed and I know that it will help so many young people and those transitioning out of foster care,” said Rep. McNally.

The YMCA’s award is part of the state’s ongoing Brownfield Remediation Program. This program helps address industrial, commercial, and institutional brownfield sites that are abandoned, idled, or underutilized due to a known or potential release of hazardous substances or petroleum. This round of funding includes $61M in funds; $45.8M will be used for 84 cleanup and remediation projects and $15.3M in assessment projects. This program has provided nearly $780M in brownfield remediation funds since 2021.
