COLUMBUS- State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) today announced the Controlling Board has approved $116,388 for the Ohio State Penitentiary (OSP) located in Youngstown to contract professional design services on a new water treatment system.

“The care of inmates is the responsibility of the state, and one that should be taken very seriously,” said Rep. McNally. “While this project is still in the early phases, I’m happy to see us taking steps toward longer-lasting state facilities and improved care for the people within them.”

The design services for the OSP’s Water Softener Project will consist of at least the replacement of existing piping, the removal of a non-functioning domestic pump system based on system requirements and location need, and incorporation of all system controls and/or alarms into the current Johnson Controls network. The new water treatment system in the high security, six-story correction facility operated by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, will be capable of softening the water for the entire main facility.

The $116,388 in capital funds from the General Building Renovation line item in FY 2023 will be locally administered and used as follows:

  • $103,188 to Olsavsky Jaminet Architects, Inc. of Youngstown for Professional Design Services.
  • $11,200 to Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) for Project Administration Fee (80%).
  • $2,000 to OFCC for the Consultant List Administration Fee.
