Reps. White, Somani Introduce Legislation to Allow Governor's Approval to Deploy the National Guard

COLUMBUS — State Reps. Erika White (D-Springfield Township) and Anita Somani (D-Dublin) today announced they will be introducing legislation which would require the Governor’s approval before National Guard troops from other states can be stationed in Ohio, reinforcing state authority in deployment decisions.
“At a moment when lines of authority are being tested, clarity matters. Lack of clarity almost always means delayed justice or no justice at all. When authority is unclear whether it’s a federal request, state command, or a hybrid status, accountability breaks down-and history shows that’s when everyday people are harmed. Because no one can clearly answer who gave the order or who is responsible. Therefore, it is our responsibility to protect the powers of the state and ensure the National Guard is activated only under lawful authority. The time is now for this bill to be considered and passed by the Ohio House. That is why I am proud to be taking substantive action with Representative Somani,” said Rep. White.
¿“Over the past year, we have unfortunately experienced countless examples of federal overreach and abuse of power. This bill reaffirms that the federal government cannot turn National Guard troops against the people of Ohio. The National Guard is meant to serve and protect Americans, not be used by the president like a personal police force. Now, it is more important than ever that we protect the balance of power in the United States,” said Rep. Somani.¿
House Democrats continue to put forward legislation that supports community safety, upholds civil rights, and provides clarity and stability for local residents, schools, and law enforcement partners.
