COLUMBUS — State Rep. Erika White (D-Springfield Township) today attended the first Helping with Homestead tour stop hosted by Lucas County Auditor Katie Moline. The event served as an opportunity to explain recent changes to the Homestead Exemption, made by House Bill (HB) 479, which includes a one-time tax credit of approximately $450 for those who qualify.

“Property tax relief only helps families if they know it is available and take the steps to receive it,” said Rep. White.House Bill 479 provides meaningful relief for Ohioans who qualify for the Homestead Exemption, and now our job is to make sure eligible seniors and homeowners with disabilities are not leaving that help on the table. That is why events like this matter - we are bringing the information directly into the community and encouraging people to apply. If you think you may qualify, please ask the question, fill out the application, and find out. Relief that you qualify for should never go unused simply because no one told you it was there.”

Senior citizens above the age of 65 and people who are totally and permanently disabled are eligible to apply if they meet the following criteria:

  • Own and occupy their home (or have ownership interest, such as a land contract) as of January 1 of the application year.
  • Show an Ohio modified adjusted gross income (applicant + spouse) of less than $41,000 for income earned in 2025. Note: Social Security income does not count toward the limit, but  many pensions do.
  • Enhanced exemptions are also available for 100% disabled military veterans and surviving spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty.

Rep. White encourages those with questions to contact the Lucas County Auditor at 419-213-4406 or attend a future Helping with Homestead tour stop.
