Mathews Introduces Legislation to Simplify Legal System

State Representatives Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon) and Brian Stewart (R-Ashville) introduced legislation that would simplify Ohio’s legal system by clarifying against which parties and in what time frame certain lawsuits must be filed.

This bill codifies a four year time period during which certain civil lawsuits must be filed against any potential defendant. Additionally, it clarifies both which industries and professions require specific named defendants and the extent to which certain businesses are liable for their employees’ misconduct. Both of these changes aim to clarify recent court decisions and solidify longstanding Ohio law.

“Ohio businesses and families deserve simplicity and stability in the law. HB 179 protects the legal environment Ohioans have come to expect,” Mathews said.

“HB 179 will ensure that lawsuits are directed at the relevant parties and that they do not unnecessarily drag in innocent, unrelated people at great personal expense,” Stewart said.

The bill received its first hearing in the House Civil Justice Committee on Tuesday and awaits further hearings.
