Carruthers Weighs in on Butler County Property Tax Increases

August 15, 2023
Sara P. Carruthers News

COLUMBUS, OH – State Representative Sara Carruthers (R-Hamilton) issued the following statement in response to Butler County Auditor Nancy Nix’s update on property value and tax increases within the county:

“I echo the auditor’s sentiments that school districts and local governments should take a realistic look at their expenses and forgo any unvoted tax increases during these unprecedented home value increases.

“Property taxes are becoming a challenge for many of our residents. There are several factors causing property taxes to rise. Taxation at the local level, the Ohio Revised Code, and the Ohio Constitution make this a complex puzzle to solve.

“Through the state operating budget, we created a property tax study committee to review these issues. In preparation for the committee’s start, I have encouraged local government leaders to begin the process of finding real solutions to this issue. The challenges we are experiencing are a result of 30 years of legislative tax code drawbacks.

“Make no mistake, there is no easy answer here. I look forward to working with experts on local taxation, like our county auditors, to pass real reform to help struggling families and seniors.

“I encourage residents who share my concerns about dramatically increased property tax rates to reach out to the Board of Revision, where taxpayers may file an appeal of their property assessment from January 1 to March 31. ”
