COLUMBUS – Today, State Rep. Thomas West (D-Canton) condemned recent incidents of gun violence, including a mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, NY and a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX.

“Gun violence is a contagious issue. This public health crisis is continuously affecting families and communities across the United States,” said Rep. West. “We have to get serious about stopping these tragedies by implementing strong measures of intervention targeted at common sense gun control, community safety and mental health support.”

Authorities in Buffalo, NY have said that the 18-year-old man who shot and killed 10 people on Saturday, May 14th was motivated by hate, callously targeting a supermarket in a predominantly Black community.

“We cannot tolerate any form of hatred, violence, or vitriol in Ohio or our nation,” said Rep. West. “As a leader in Ohio and the 49th House District, I am calling on all elected officials, business leaders and community advocates to cease all divisive and hateful rhetoric that fuels this behavior. We need all hands on deck to end this crisis, and I urge other legislative leaders in our state and across America to act now.”
