COLUMBUS – State Rep. Tavia Galonski (D-Akron) yesterday recognized 136 champions from the All-American Soap Box Derby, which first began in 1934 and takes place in House District 35 every summer. The International Soap Box Derby (ISBD) is the recognized governing body of Soap Box Derby racing, and includes the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby and the Gravity Racing Challenge. Derby dates back to 1934 and has grown to more than 600 races in 120 racing districts throughout the world each year.

Representing nearly 70 communities throughout the state, the honorees included Ohio Local and Rally Champions who competed in the 83rd FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship and Gravity Racing Challenge STEM Team Champions from Preston Elementary School, Coventry High School, Louisville High School, Barberton High School, and Austintown Middle School.

“It was an absolute pleasure to celebrate our champions from all across the State of Ohio at the Statehouse,” said Rep. Galonski. “Participants in the Soap Box Derby come from all across our state, country, and globe. I am proud to be able to welcome them to Ohio’s 35th District to learn the value of STEM principles while enjoying good, clean, family fun in the process.”

During their Statehouse recognition event, the champions received commendations from their state legislators, Governor DeWine, and Secretary of State LaRose, and were recognized for their accomplishments during today’s House session. During session, the champions had the opportunity to see the House vote overwhelmingly to pass HB 423, legislation to designate the All-American Soap Box Derby as the State of Ohio’s official gravity racing program.

“I originally authored the legislation that passed the House as HB 423 today and was proud to sign on as a co-sponsor of this bill. I thank my colleagues for recognizing the importance of the All-American Soap Box Derby, which has brought a positive impact to students and families throughout Ohio,” said Rep. Galonski.

The bill now moves to the Ohio Senate for further hearings.

Upcoming Soap Box Derby events in District 35 include:

-          Akron Area Local Race – June 11
