Rep. Galonski Announces $1 Million in Funds to Support Capital Improvements on University of Akron’s Campus

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Tavia Galonski (D-Akron) announced today that the state Controlling Board approved over $1 million in funding for capital improvement projects at the University of Akron. The funds will support the purchase of equipment used in workforce development training programs at the university, as well as improvements to water supply and return lines for the Dorothy Garrett Martin Fountain Vault and key thoroughfare throughout campus.

“I am so pleased that the Controlling Board has approved these funds, which will support important programs and safety improvements at the University of Akron,” said Rep. Galonski. “I am particularly glad to see that the university will be able to improve walkways, steps, ramps, and other pedestrian routes on campus, which will make it a safer place for students to get to and from class.”

Additionally, the Controlling Board approved $50 million to be used to invest in healthcare, infrastructure, and workforce development in Appalachia. This investment was made possible by Democrats’ American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). As a result of ARPA funds, the region will see updates to mental health and trauma facilities, capital investments in downtown areas and a career pathway program.

Other approved items include:

  • $6.25 million in statewide grants to improve recreational trails and outdoor recreation.
  • $280,000 to fund Ohio’s GEAR UP Grant, helping low-income middle and high school students get a postsecondary education.
  • $205,000 in funding for the Ohio School for the Deaf and the Ohio State School for the Blind to help teachers build foundational skills and engage students.
