COLUMBUS – State Representative Shawn Stevens (R-Sunbury) announced the release of more than $478,000 Monday for improvements to the Ohio to Erie Trail near Sunbury.
The funds, awarded to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, will be used to convert a railroad bridge to a pedestrian bridge crossing over Big Walnut Creek. Additionally, a 10-feet wide multi-use asphalt trail will be placed on each side of the bridge crossing.
“I am pleased to see money coming to the district in support of some of our natural wonders,” said Stevens. “These improvements will help provide an outdoor recreational opportunity while preserving a piece of natural habitat.”
The allocation for the bridge crossing is part of more than $6.2 million awarded to 16 other community projects around the state to acquire new trail corridors and improve trail infrastructure to link statewide trails, parks and urban areas to recreational areas. The grants were awarded through the Clean Ohio Trail Fund.
