On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-Toledo) announced a $2 million dollar federal grant to help mitigate harmful algal blooms by reducing fertilizer runoff into the Western Lake Erie basin. State Rep. Mike Sheehy (D-Oregon) released the following statement in support of the grant:

“Providing farmers with an incentive to plant cover crops in the winter is one way we can limit phosphorus runoff and prevent harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie. The state legislature should go a step further and pass my legislation to ban the land application of manure in winter, House Bill 611. This combination could drastically reduce runoff from farms and significantly lessen the size and detrimental impact of harmful algal blooms for years to come.”
