COLUMBUS— Rep. Mary Lightbody (D-Westerville) issued a statement following the announcement that Ohioans who were overpaid unemployment benefits during the coronavirus pandemic will be eligible for a waiver to avoid costly repayments. Ohioans who saw their benefits stolen by scammers will also be eligible for replacement payments.
“I have heard from many constituents about the concerns they face in navigating the ODJFS unemployment system. This announcement is a step in the right direction towards resolving some of the concerns that I hear frequently. Every eligible Ohioan should receive the payment that they are due and those who received erroneous payments through no fault of their own should not be subject to unnecessary penalties. I encourage ODJFS to work expeditiously to implement these changes,” said Rep. Lightbody.
Thousands of Ohioans received overpayments because of errors made by state officials or employers during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
House Democrats introduced House Bill 139 earlier this year to require the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services to waive unemployment overpayment collection.
