State Rep. Emilia Sykes (D-Akron) today released the following statement regarding Cuyahoga County Commons Pleas Judge Michael J. Russo’s ruling that the state overstepped its constitutional authority when it sought to block local hiring laws around the state:
“I commend this week’s commonsense ruling to block the state’s local hiring ban, because I believe working men and women deserve a fair shot at good-paying local jobs that can provide economic stability for them and their families.
“Local hiring standards are an effective tool for communities to combat high unemployment rates, especially among minority communities in our state’s urban cores.
“The state should partner with local communities to expand economic opportunities for everyone, not attack home rule authority and restrict residents from participating in their own communities’ economic development.
“I sincerely hope the state will not contest this ruling and fight to uphold restrictions on local hiring, but instead allow communities to make local decisions to benefit working families.”
