COLUMBUS- State Rep. Brigid Kelly (D-Cincinnati)  today announced passage of House Bill (HB) 194, her bipartisan bill  with Rep. Dave Greenspan (R-Cleveland)to legalize and regulate sports gaming businesses in the State of Ohio. The bill would also create a 10 percent sports wagering tax, which would be utilized specifically for public education and gaming addiction.

“Ohioans who want to bet on sports should be able to do it right here at home. HB 194 will create a safe, secure way to play,” said Rep. Kelly. “This legislation will also provide additional resources for education, which is especially important right now.”

HB 194 would create a Sports Gaming Advisory Board dedicated to regulating sports gaming businesses. Ohio would become the 12th state to legalize sports gaming businesses since the U.S. Supreme Court lifted its ban in 2018.

According to the Legislative Service Commission, the 10 percent sports wagering tax would generate about $17.8 million in revenue for FY 2021 and up to $23.7 million in FY 2022.

After passing the House, HB 194 now awaits further consideration by the Ohio Senate.
