Rep. Kelly: SB 9 threatens public safety by forcing agencies to arbitrarily cut regulations

COLUMBUS —State Rep. Brigid Kelly (D-Cincinnati) issued a statement following the Ohio House passage of Senate Bill (SB) 9, Republican-backed legislation that forces agencies to choose between following an arbitrary regulation cap or implementing measures that would protect the safety and well-being of our communities.

“Instead of focusing on issues that impact Ohioans every day, Republicans want to focus on arbitrarily cutting regulations, including measures that are in place to protect the health and safety of our communities,” said Rep. Kelly. “Everyone wants to cut red tape, but we have to do it in a way that is carefully considered, not through a word-find.”

SB 9 threatens to harm public safety by requiring state agencies to reduce regulatory standards by 30 percent by 2025. Under SB 9, agencies would be prohibited from adopting new regulations if they increase the overall percentage. The bill also fails to specify how an agency must proceed if another law is enacted that requires the agency to adopt a new standard if they have already hit the percentage cap.

SB 9 now heads to the Governor’s desk.
