Rep. Kelly: Republicans shouldn't be prioritizing controversial bills that threaten safety, health of Ohioans

Legislation to repeal duty to notify, slow state's COVID-19 response not what Ohioans need right now

COLUMBUS—Ranking Democrat Rep. Brigid Kelly (D-Cincinnati) issued a statement after the House State and Local Government Committee heard testimony yesterday on two controversial GOP bills that would threaten the safety and health of Ohioans. House Bill (HB) 90 would curb executive authority from the state health director and Governor to issue orders during public health emergencies, while HB 89 would no longer require concealed carry permit holders to promptly inform officers they have a permit and if they’re carrying.

“There is still a global health crisis. We are still in the middle of a pandemic, and too many Ohioans are struggling to get by. Instead of pushing bills that will make people less safe, the legislature should be focused on policies that protect and uplift the people in our state,” said Rep. Kelly.

In contrast, Democrats continue to prioritize a robust response to the coronavirus pandemic, commonsense gun safety legislation, police and criminal justice reforms, paid family and medical leave, Aisha’s Law, raising the minimum wage, restoring tax fairness and fair school funding.
