State Rep. Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) announces that $1.3 million has been awarded to the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office to focus on crime reduction throughout the region. Cutrona supported the legislation that created the grant program.

“Our state budget created the Ohio Violent Crime Reduction Grant Program that I supported down at the Statehouse,” Cutrona said. “As we have seen violent crime surge over the last two years, I was proud to back our law enforcement agencies and our communities by supporting this initiative and many others focused on reducing crime and enhancing public safety.”

The goal of the grant program is to give local law enforcement more resources to address violent and increasing crime rates and to assist agencies with law enforcement retirements and resignations.

The grant program comes from the state budget that Cutrona cosponsored and supported on the House floor when it was approved by the General Assembly last year.

Cutrona also was the primary sponsor of House Bill 169, which provided $250 million to fighting violent crime and supporting first responders.

In total through the Violent Crime Reduction Grant Program, Mahoning County has been awarded a total of approximately $21 million.
