State Rep. Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) announces that the Ohio K-12 School Safety Grant Program is now accepting applications. The initiative was made possible through legislation Cutrona cosponsored and supported to strengthen school security. The funding stems from House Bill 687, which allocates $100 million for this grant program.

“We’ve dedicated significant funds toward this program to enhance the security throughout our schools,” Cutrona said. “We must protect our children and all the staff at our school districts, it’s plain and simple. This funding is going to be a tremendous step forward for strengthening school safety here in the Valley and throughout Ohio.”

Earlier this month, it was announced several school districts within Mahoning County had received the latest funding awards through the program. Cutrona notes that while new schools that have not yet received funding will be prioritized, schools that have received funding previously can still re-apply for additional funds.

The grant program is to assist districts with physical security enhancements, such as security cameras, public address systems, automatic door locks, visitor badging systems, and exterior lighting.

Other than the inclusion of the school safety grant program, House Bill 687 acted as this year’s capital budget bill. Within the bill, Cutrona previously announced his efforts in securing over $4 million in funding for Mahoning County projects, which was one of the ten highest funded counties throughout the state within the legislation.
