COLUMBUS – State Representative Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) announced today he will soon be introducing legislation that will exempt guns, ammunition, and knives from sales tax.

“Rights guaranteed to us by the Bill of Rights should not be taxed,” said Cutrona.

Currently, Ohio recognizes this policy with other goods that are protected by the Bill of Rights. For example, since 1935, the state of Ohio has exempted newspapers from being subject to sales tax.

This legislation would make Ohio gun, ammunition, and knife retailers and manufacturers more competitive with those in neighboring states.

Cutrona said, “This bill is an important way to promote our rights while also helping Ohio businesses and consumers.”

If passed, this legislation would make Ohio one of the first states that has a specific sales tax exemption in place for goods protected by the Second Amendment.
