COLUMBUS – State Representative Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) co-sponsored House Bill 197, which passed the House unanimously earlier today. The legislation authorizes an income tax credit for an employer’s expenses to train a commercial vehicle operator to address Ohio’s truck driver shortage.

“Our truck drivers are the backbone of American, and they are responsible for delivering goods necessary for life. Without their work, modern day society would not be possible,” said Cutrona. “House Bill 197 helps to address the shortage of CDL drivers across our state by offering their employers tax credits for training new drivers.”

The legislation lays out the framework for companies who invest in training their drivers to be offered a nonrefundable tax credit equal to one-half of the employer’s actual training expenses. The credit would be capped at $25,000 per company.

H.B. 197 now heads to the Senate for consideration.
