State Representative Wes Retherford (R-Hamilton) yesterday spoke about the problem of elder abuse in Ohio at a Statehouse event hosted by the ACTION OHIO Coalition for Battered Women.

Rep. Retherford highlighted House Bill 49, the “Ohio Elder Justice Act,” which he is sponsoring along with Rep. Mike Dovilla (R-Berea). The legislation would update Ohio’s outdated definitions pertaining to elder abuse, which according to current law largely define “elder abuse” as physical abuse, as well as protect against financial harm.

“With financial exploitation of seniors on the rise, we need to ensure that the life savings and homes of Ohio’s seniors are protected,” Rep. Retherford said. “I’m pleased to have been invited by ACTION OHIO to speak about the legislation and draw attention to the issue.”

House Bill 49 is currently under consideration in the House Judiciary Committee.
