Ohio House Adopts April as Month of the Military Child

Tracy M. Richardson News

COLUMBUS – State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) announced today that the Ohio House has adopted a resolution she introduced honoring this April as the Month of the Military Child in Ohio.

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger designated April as the Month of the Military Child in 1986 in an effort to increase public knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding children who have a parent in the military.

According to the Military Child Education Coalition, there are approximately 2 million U.S. military children under the age of eighteen, 1.1 million of whom are school-aged. The average military student attends between six and nine different school systems from kindergarten through high school graduation, including two changes during high school alone.

Representative Richardson is proud to serve on the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) Rutan State Council in Ohio. MIC3 endeavors to ease scholastic transitions for dependents of military families so that they are afforded the same opportunities for success as their peers and are not delayed in achieving their educational goals.

During her many years of service as a military officer, Representative Richardson has learned and experienced the challenges that military families must face on a recurring basis. In particular, the family members of those currently serving in our Ohio National Guard are experiencing heightened concerns as the units work to support COVID-19 related operations.

“At this time, with the Ohio National Guard mission to help our communities address COVID-19 needs, it is more important than ever that we show military families the support they deserve,” Richardson said. “The dependents of U.S. Armed Forces members are deserving of profound admiration for their strength, courage, and sacrifices, and I hope you will join me in in celebrating April as the Month of the Military Child in Ohio.”
