The Ohio House of Representatives approved the passage of legislation known as the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which restricts abortions at 20 weeks or greater or when the unborn child can feel pain.

The bill, sponsored by Senators Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering) and Jay Hottinger (R-Newark), includes provisions that would prohibit purposely performing or inducing an abortion when the probable age of the unborn child is 20 weeks or greater.

Senate Bill 127 received multiple hearings in the House Community and Family Advancement Committee, which is chaired by State Representative Tim Ginter (R-Salem).

Rep. Ginter provided the following statement:

“This pro-life measure is another opportunity for Ohio to stand strong and unite against this loss of life. Medical science supports that by this 20-week mark, unborn children have developed the capacity to feel pain and I believe it is important for us to protect these unborn children from harm. Therefore, I was proud to stand in support of this legislation.”

The bill now goes to the governor for his consideration.
