Guest Column From State Representative Steve Hambley
Ohio 2020: Setting the Groundwork for Ohio's Future

As I continue my first term as your state representative in the Ohio House, our House Republican caucus has made planning for Ohio’s future a priority. Under the leadership of our House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, we have put together a plan called “Ohio 2020.” This vision focuses on four major policy areas from which to introduce legislation: competitiveness, energy, education, and health.

Ohio will continue to thrive and make improvements if we can compete nationally and around the world. Keeping businesses and attracting new ones is imperative to this. Focusing on policy that fosters economic development is how we can continue the success we’ve witnessed over the past few years. We will be working on lowering the new business filing fee to make it easier for entrepreneurs to thrive, work with JobsOhio to connect with individuals looking for work and incentivize education and training for young people to keep employers’ desks filled with applications from qualified applicants.

Another important focus is to increase our reputation as an energy-producing state. By powering our businesses and our homes with reliable energy created right here in Ohio, we can continue to make good use of our natural resources. Our committees will also be working to ensure that water quality improves and safe practices are being used in this field.

As mentioned earlier, educating the skilled workforce of tomorrow is crucial. We must work collaboratively around the state and within our communities to do this effectively.  As a former college professor, I have seen firsthand the impact that a good education can have on a young student. I will use my past experiences in the classroom while serving in the legislature to be a voice for good education policy.

Keeping Ohioans healthy has always been and will remain a priority to the General Assembly. Keeping healthcare affordable and of the highest quality is very important to me. We must work to make sure our residents understand the true costs of healthcare, and help them to find the best medical assistance for their own personal situations. I hope to see our policies help our citizens move off of public support and see healthcare costs in Ohio go down, helping all those who require care.

By looking to the future and the present, and using the lessons of the past, we can legislate more effectively and better serve our constituents. I applaud this Ohio 2020 vision and can’t wait to see the positive effects it has for years to come. As with all state government related issues, I encourage you to contact me and share your views.
