COLUMBUS -

Ohio House Speaker William G. Batchelder (R-Medina) announced that State Representative Ryan Smith (R-Bidwell) has been appointed vice chair of the House Prescription Drug Addiction and Healthcare Reform Study Committee. Previously, Rep. Smith announced that the study committee will be holding its first hearing in Jackson County on August 20th.

The public hearing will be held at Holzer Medical Center (500 Burlington Rd., Jackson, Ohio 45640) at 1 p.m. It will explore ways to address the issue of drug abuse and addiction, an issue that has become a rampant problem in Ohio. Since 2007, unintentional drug overdose death has been the leading cause of accidental death in Ohio. Two-thirds of these deaths involved a prescription opioid, more than cocaine, heroin and marijuana deaths combined.

“Prescription drug addiction has become an epidemic in southeastern Ohio,” said Rep. Smith said in his previous release. “It is affecting our communities and destroying families. I am very pleased to have a study committee coming to our area in order to help us form a comprehensive plan for this overwhelming problem.”

“Throughout his time as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, Rep. Smith has demonstrated that he is a remarkable leader on a variety of issues,” Speaker Batchelder said. “He is an excellent, capable legislator who will work closely with the public and our colleagues in the House to reduce the incidences of this tragic epidemic.”

The fight to address prescription drug abuse in Ohio was initiated by the signing of House Bill 93 into law in April 2011. Although this legislation was effective in helping to close Ohio’s pill mills, many Ohioans continue to struggle with addiction and move toward other illegal drugs as accessibility of prescription opioids has decreased.
