State Representative Ryan Smith (R-Bidwell) today announced the passage of Substitute Senate Bill 182 by the Ohio House of Representatives, an omnibus bill that designates multiple memorial highways across the state.

The legislation includes House Bill 366, a road-naming bill sponsored by Rep. Smith, which names a portion of highway in Jackson County after Sergeant Donald Russell Long. Sgt. Long was killed in action while serving during the Vietnam War in 1966 when he dived on a grenade, saving eight of his fellow troops’ lives. Long received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic act.

Under the bill, the portion of State Route 93 from its intersection with Cedar Street in Jackson County to the boundary of Jackson County and Lawrence County is designated as the “Sgt. Donald Russell Long, Medal of Honor Recipient, Memorial Highway.”

“The bravery that Sgt. Long displayed nearly fifty years ago left an indelible mark on the community from which he came, and now this monument will serve as yet another reminder of his deeds,” Rep. Smith said. “I am very thankful that the House passed SB 182, honoring an American hero, Sgt. Donald Russell Long.”

Substitute Senate Bill 182 will now return to the Ohio Senate for concurrence on the changes made by the House.
