COLUMBUS—State Representative Ron Hood (R-Ashville) yesterday supported legislation aimed at supporting life and addressing women’s healthcare in Ohio.

House Bill 294 requires the Ohio Department of Health to redirect state funds away from entities that perform or promote non-therapeutic abortions, as well as prohibit contracts with entities that perform these procedures. That stipulation extends to funds received from various federal initiatives, including:

• The Violence Against Women Act
• Breast and Cervical Cancer Mortality Prevention Act
• Infertility Prevention Project
• Minority HIV/AIDS Initiative
• The Infant Mortality Reduction or Infant Vitality Initiatives
• Personal Responsibility Education Program

"Substitute House Bill 294 creates a solution to a part of the problem of tax funding of abortion providers.  However, it doesn't address Medicaid reimbursement funding to abortion providers. This oversight leaves those who perform and promote abortions with a conduit for receiving taxpayer funds that should be closed."

Although the bill works to ensure that these taxpayer dollars are not being distributed to entities that perform non-therapeutic abortions, committee testimony pointed out that women still have ample access to healthcare in the state.  According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, Ohio has 280 federally qualified health clinics and rural health clinics that serve as alternatives to the 28 Planned Parenthood locations. Ohioans can find these alternatives at GetYourCare.org.

House Bill 294 now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
