COLUMBUS – House Bills 253, 528 and 680 and Senate Bill 310 passed out of the Ohio House of Representatives last Thursday, June 4, announced State Representative Rick Perales (R-Beavercreek).

House Bill 253 revises Ohio’s fireworks law and empowers local governments to make their own decisions when it comes to the allowance or restriction of fireworks. The legislation establishes the Ohio Fire Code Rule Recommendation Committee, whose role will be to review the Fireworks Law and make recommendations to the State Fire Marshal. The end goal of the legislation is to safely legalize and regulate fireworks in Ohio.

House Bill 528 amends Ohio’s reinsurance model law imposed on insurers when they reinsure risk. Reinsurance is when an insurer buys insurance from a separate insurer to cover a portion or all of their potential liabilities. Under Ohio’s current law, insurers that reinsure risk with other insurers that meet certain standards may claim either reduced liabilities or increased assets when the original insurer’s financial stability is assessed.

House Bill 680 protects Ohio’s elections and ensures that no public official officer can cause an election to be conducted other than in the time, place and manner prescribed. The legislation also helps to ensure absentee ballots are processed on time and adjusts the deadline for voters to apply to receive ballots by mail, further securing Ohio’s elections process.

Senate Bill 310 provides continued capital reappropriations financing and federal COVID-19 relief funding to higher education institutions and local governments. The legislation will greatly and positively affect the 73rd House District.
