Home to more than 850,000 veterans, Ohio has a long and proud military tradition that stretches throughout the history of our nation. Time and time again, Ohioans have answered the call of duty to defend the rights and freedoms that we enjoy here at home. Preserving the military history of Ohio and honoring our service members should be priorities that we all share.

The Ohio History Connection (formerly the Ohio Historical Society), in coordination with the Ohio Department of Veterans Services and the Franklin County Veterans Service Commission, is requesting donations of memorabilia from current and past military service members and their families. These donations can be everyday items such as photographs, letters, and keepsakes that would help tell the stories of Ohio’s veterans. By preserving these memories, we can honor the sacrifice of military service members and their families, while also increasing our collective understanding of our state’s military heritage.

To this end, the Ohio History Connection will use the donated materials from all branches of the military to build an exhibit in the new Ohio Veterans’ Memorial and Museum being constructed in Columbus, or at one of the Ohio History Connection’s more than 50 sites across the state.  In particular, the Ohio History Connection is in need of items from the past 50 years, such as from the Korean War, Vietnam War, and recent conflicts in the Persian Gulf, and Iraq and Afghanistan.

As a former Commander in the U.S. Air Force at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, preserving Ohio’s military legacy is an issue of great personal significance to me.  It is important that we work together to preserve this key part of our state’s history for future generations.

If you have questions about donating military memorabilia, I encourage you to contact the Ohio History Connection at 614-297-2535 or veterans@ohiohistory.org. As always, you can contact my office at (614) 644-6020 or rep73@ohiohouse.gov.
