COLUMBUS -

State Representative Rick Perales (R-Beavercreek) today announced that Gov. John Kasich signed House Bill 292 into law. The new law creates a committee that will bring the State’s aerospace and aviation community together to develop a coordinated strategy to improve the industry’s economic opportunities, as well as elevating Ohio’s aviation and aerospace status in the country and world.

Ohio already has robust aerospace and aviation industries, as evidenced by the fact that 17% of total US employment in the aerospace and aviation industry is located in Ohio.  But according to Perales, the sponsor of the bill, the state can do much more.

“Given our aerospace and aviation legacy, public and private resources, leading universities and research institutes and related expertise in Ohio, I believe we’ve only scratched the surface,” said Perales. “I am proud to be a part of this effort.  Ohio will be able to accomplish a great deal more with a unified aerospace and aviation strategy developed predominantly by aerospace and aviation experts.”

The Ohio Aerospace and Aviation Technology Committee will work to create jobs, increase communication and resource-sharing across the industry, support federal retention activities, and create an overall sense of unity among members of the aerospace and aviation community.

“I expect the findings of this committee will bring about strategies that bolster the great work of Wright Patterson Air Force Base, NASA Glenn Research Center, and all aerospace and aviation industries and activities throughout Ohio,” said Perales.  “Ohio has a great aviation heritage, and this committee is just one more step in reminding the country and even the world that the heart of aviation resides here in Ohio.”

The Aerospace and Technology Committee will consist of 21 members, including three state senators, three state representatives, and one appointment by the governor. The six members from the House and Senate would then appoint 14 experts from the aviation and aerospace industry, the military, and academia. The members will have diverse aerospace and aviation expertise, and also represent all regions of the state.  According to Perales, the Committee will help foster deeper connections among an often disparate industry.
