08.08.18 - Rep. Antonio Responds To Ohio Supreme Court Ruling Against ECOT

State Rep. Nickie Antonio (D-Lakewood) today expressed satisfaction with the Ohio Supreme Court ruling that the online charter school ECOT violated state law by fraudulently boosting student attendance records to cheat taxpayers of some $80 million.

“Today is a win for our public schools,” said Antonio. “For too long, ECOT got away with lying to taxpayers and ripping off the state of Ohio. I hope going forward the legislature will demand transparency from charter schools while working harder to uplift our public schools.”

07.31.18 - Antonio: Back-to-school Sales Tax Holiday Starts This Weekend

State Rep. Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) today announced Ohio’s back-to-school sales tax-free holiday scheduled for this weekend, August 3-5, as a result of the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 226. The annual event helps lessen the sting of the 4.5 percent statewide sales tax hike passed by Republican lawmakers in the 2013 state budget. The hike has cost taxpayers almost $2 billion more since then, according to state revenue numbers.

“I was supportive of SB 226 when it came before the Ohio House of Representatives, because it will help strengthen our communities by ensuring that families are able to purchase necessary school items for their children at a lower cost,” said Antonio. “As both a mother and a former educator, I truly understand the importance of this bill for families all across the state of Ohio.”

07.11.18 - Lawmaker Responds To Fattening State Budget Surplus

After cutting almost $1 billion from local schools and $2 billion from communities throughout the state, Ohio Republicans announced today additional funding for the state’s budget reserve fund. House Finance Committee member and state Rep. Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) issued the following statement in response:

“It is time for Ohio Republicans to be honest about their political game-playing with Ohio’s state budget reserves. Though the previous administration made tough decisions to put Ohio in a stronger place during the global financial recession of 2009, Republicans today continue to fill the fund with money that has been cut from local communities and schools throughout the state. That’s not governing or making tough decisions, it’s passing the buck to local taxpayers with new and increased levies to make up for the failure of leadership at the state level.”

06.29.18 - Ohio AG Needs To Open Independent Harassment Investigation Of Bill Seitz, Lawmakers Say

State Reps. Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) and Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) today asked* Ohio Attorney General (AG) Mike DeWine to hire an objective third party to reopen the harassment investigation of Rep. Bill Seitz (R-Cincinnati). The letter comes after it was reported that Taft Stettinius & Hollister, the law firm which conducted the investigation, donated to Seitz’ campaign and had employed Seitz for 36 years. The investigation concluded that the allegations of inappropriate conduct made against Seitz by a female House employee did not constitute sexual harassment according to the House’s anti-harassment policy and said the complaint may have been politically motivated. The basis of the findings, however, directly conflict with the AG’s anti-sexual harassment training given to state lawmakers and staff prior to the event.
