State Rep. Michele Lepore-Hagan (D-Youngstown) today commented on the Senate confirmation of newly-appointed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos:

“Today, the Republican majority in the U.S. Senate confirmed Betsy DeVos, who may be the most unqualified candidate ever to be nominated for a cabinet post, as secretary of education.

“The intense, fact-based effort to convince Republicans that she was not fit fell short, overcome by an alternative-fact-based assault on reality.

“So that battle is over. Today, America’s kids and families lost.

“Now it’s time to turn our attention to the next fight: the fight to make Ohio’s public schools so exceptional that they will be impervious to Ms. DeVos’ misguided beliefs and destructive programs.

“Gov. Kasich’s budget, which once again shortchanges Ohio’s public schools, teachers, students and parents falls woefully short of moving us toward that goal.

“I intend to forcefully advocate for funding that will ensure every child in Ohio has the opportunity to reach their full potential, whether they live in an urban center, a suburb, on a farm or in Appalachia.

“We can – we must – work harder than ever before to make Ohio’s public schools the best in the nation, on par with any in the world, because that is the key to our future.

“The battle to make this dream a reality begins anew today.”
