Across the country and the state this weekend, Americans are preparing for cookouts, ballgames and time with family and friends.  It is Memorial Day weekend, which means a great time to enjoy various festivities.

However, it is also a time to memorialize those veterans who have given their lives for our freedom.  They have fought for our peace, liberty and livelihood.  As representative of the 40th House District, I am always looking for opportunities to honor veterans, and one way I can do that is through the Medal of Distinction ceremony that takes place every year at the Statehouse.

My colleagues and I, in both the Ohio House of Representatives and Senate, attended a Joint Session for this ceremony last week. Family of SPC Angel L. Lopez of Parma, Ohio and SSG Sonny C. Zimmerman of Lima, Ohio, who gave their lives in service last year, attended the ceremony to receive the Ohio Military Medal of Distinction in memory of their loved ones.

I am honored to have been a part of this ceremony as it pays tribute to those who give the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.  They are patriots and true American heroes.  This award is just a small way that we say can say “thank you” to them and their families.

I encourage everyone in the district to take a moment to thank a veteran or to look for ways here at home to serve our country.  Take a moment to reflect on the lives of these fallen soldiers and their bravery while protecting United States citizens. You can even say a prayer or give to a charity invested in assisting veterans.  But most importantly, let us not take for granted the generous gift they have given us of freedom.  Let us think of those fallen heroes and make every effort to cherish our American way of life and all the blessings that come with it.

Please, as we spend time with family and loved ones this weekend and maybe enjoy a day off of work, thank a veteran or reverently reflect on departed patriots. It is because of them that we can celebrate together in peace and harmony.
