06.22.17 - Ashford Honors Young Toledo Leader At Statehouse

State Rep. Michael Ashford (D-Toledo) this week honored recent St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy graduate Keyaunte Jones, who was named Ohio youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Ohio. The lawmaker yesterday presented Keyaunte with House Resolution (HR) 149, which commends the Toledo native for his high achievements in leadership, academics and service to both the city of Toledo and the state of Ohio.

“I’m always proud to have the opportunity to recognize Toledo’s youth for their outstanding achievements,” said Ashford. “Mr. Jones is a proven leader and is well-deserving of this high and prestigious honor. I cannot wait to see what he accomplishes in the future.”

05.22.17 - Toledo Lawmaker Announces $2.5M In State Funds For Job Creation, Public Health

State Rep. Michael Ashford (D-Toledo) today announced the release of nearly $2.5 million in state funds to the city of Toledo and to the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital for public roadwork improvements and safety renovations, respectively. The funding was approved by the state Controlling Board, a panel tasked with oversight of state spending.

FCA US, LLC, also known as Fiat Chrysler, received $2,400,000 for a project that includes the repaving of parts of Chrysler Drive and Expressway Drive in Toledo. The roadwork improvement project is expected to help create 679 new, full-time-equivalent jobs and retain 4,485 jobs.

“Creating and retaining good-paying jobs in Toledo has been one of my primary goals as a legislator,” said Ashford. “I am pleased that the state has invested in a project that will not only make our roads safer, but will bring new job opportunities to our community.”

05.18.17 - Ashford: Workers Forced To Pay For Boss' Mistakes In Ohio Workers' Comp Bill

State Rep. Mike Ashford (D-Toledo) this week voted “no” on the Republican-led charge to restrict worker’s access to healthcare and benefits through the state’s Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) budget bill, House Bill 27. The bill passed the House Insurance Committee and the House Finance Committee on a party-line vote Tuesday.

GOP lawmakers undertook a significant rewrite of what is typically a noncontroversial budget bill to include benefit restrictions on firefighters with cancer, a loophole for big corporations who hire undocumented workers, and a legal nod to the state’s largest failing online charter school and GOP campaign fundraiser, ECOT.

New restrictions also halve the amount of time workers currently have to file a claim, something Democrats say could economically destabilizes thousands of Ohio families.

“Ohio’s first responders every day experience extreme working conditions most of us can barely imagine, but Ohio Republicans want to make it harder for firefighters to get the help they need and deserve when they get injured or sick on the job,” said Ashford. “I offered an amendment to remove Republicans’ attacks on workers and first responders, but unfortunately my proposal was rejected largely along party lines. I believe we must do more to protect those who protect us.”

05.11.17 - Ashford: GOP Tells Firefighters With Cancer: "It's Your Fault"

Democratic members of the House Insurance Committee today expressed outrage regarding the latest version of the state workers’ compensation budget, House Bill 27, which adds new barriers to firefighters and their families seeking state assistance for work-related injuries, illnesses and death.

Wednesday’s proposed restrictions follow the House’s December 2016 passage of extended workers’ compensation protections for firefighters who developed cancer as a result of work conditions. The bill creates a condition in which courts presumes the firefighter didn't wear their protective gear correctly, resulting in the medical condition or cancer.

“The original intent of HB 27 was to provide basic financial coverage for the firefighters who develop life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, chronic bronchitis and asthma that resulted from fighting fires that contain cancer-agents. The new challenges place the burden on the firefighters that they have to prove that they did in fact wear all protective equipment,” said Rep. Michael Ashford (D-Toledo). “It’s a sad day when Republicans tell our first responders it’s okay for you to place your life on the line, but if you develop any illness while on the job, now you have to prove that you were not at fault.”
