07.07.17 - Ashford: Medicaid Restrictions, Taxes Among Eleven Potential Law Changes From House GOP Veto Showdown With Governor

Yesterday, the Republican-controlled Ohio House of Representatives overrode eleven items Governor John Kasich vetoed in the recently passed state budget, House Bill (HB) 49. Under the House’s overrides, Medicaid expansion would have to be reauthorized through the state Controlling Board and new taxes on working people could be put in place as a condition of healthcare coverage.

“On Wednesday, July 5, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Statehouse to voice their support for Medicaid,” said Rep. Michael Ashford (D-Toledo). “Although House Republicans did not push for the Medicaid freeze yesterday, they found a loophole to limit healthcare access by giving the Controlling Board the authority to restrict Medicaid expansion. These kinds of bureaucratic hurdles will make it harder for our communities to get the care they need, including more than three million low-income and disabled Ohioans.”

07.06.17 - Ashford: GOP Bill To Weaken Concealed Carry Protections Puts Public Safety In The Crosshairs

In a political effort to hamstring Ohio House Democratic lawmakers in a pro-gun, anti-gun debate today on the House floor, Republicans brought forward House Bill (HB) 233 for a vote, legislation that allows concealed carry permit holders to knowingly bring guns or deadly weapons into daycares, schools, airports, bars and other restricted spaces, so long as the permit holder leaves when asked to do so. Individuals who refuse to leave or return to the same business while carrying a prohibited weapon within 30 days will be subject to a fourth degree misdemeanor.

“This isn’t just a solution looking for a problem, but it is creating a whole new set of public safety problems by overturning Ohio laws designed to keep us safe and secure,” said House Democratic Leader Fred Strahorn (D-Dayton). “This will trample private property rights of business owners and create confusion in secure locations like airports, police stations, schools and daycares. As a gun owner and strong second amendment supporter, I think Ohioans deserve to feel safe and secure, free from the fear of intimidation or tragedies this bill could create,” added Strahorn.

06.30.17 - Ashford: State's Fake Budget Built On Broken Economic Outlook, Six Years Of Few Results And Empty Job Promises

State Rep. Michael Ashford (D-Toledo) on Wednesday voted “no” on House Bill 49, Ohio’s biennium budget legislation. During negotiations earlier this week, Republican lawmakers pushed the budget closer to the brink with eleventh hour horse-trading over a Medicaid lockout and complex money maneuvers to make up for a $1 billion financial shortfall.

“From the time Gov. Kasich took office in 2011 to the present, Ohio’s economy has seen disastrous declines in education funding and empty promises regarding job creation.” said Ashford. “Now, Republican lawmakers want to make massive budget cuts to pay for their own mistakes. This budget is fake, fiscally irresponsible and unfairly places a heavier burden on local communities. Taking away vital services and programs will have a devastating impact on the most vulnerable Ohioans.”

06.22.17 - Ashford Honors Young Toledo Leader At Statehouse

State Rep. Michael Ashford (D-Toledo) this week honored recent St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy graduate Keyaunte Jones, who was named Ohio youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Ohio. The lawmaker yesterday presented Keyaunte with House Resolution (HR) 149, which commends the Toledo native for his high achievements in leadership, academics and service to both the city of Toledo and the state of Ohio.

“I’m always proud to have the opportunity to recognize Toledo’s youth for their outstanding achievements,” said Ashford. “Mr. Jones is a proven leader and is well-deserving of this high and prestigious honor. I cannot wait to see what he accomplishes in the future.”
