COLUMBUS – The Ohio Council of the Alzheimer’s Association recently presented State Representative Phil Plummer (R-Dayton) with the 2023 Sharen Eckert Leadership in Advocacy Award, in recognition of his support of the Alzheimer’s Association and its public policy efforts.

“I am honored to receive the Sharen Eckert Leadership in Advocacy Award and to have had the opportunity to work on behalf of those who have been affected by this debilitating condition, either personally or through a loved one,” Plummer said. “Through ongoing efforts by groups like the Alzheimer’s Association, I am confident that we will notice great progress in this fight and improvements in the lives of patients facing mental illness.”

Plummer authored legislation in the 134th General Assembly that requires emergency medical personnel and law enforcement officers to receive training on recognizing signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia-related conditions and how to interact with individuals they respond to assists.

The Alzheimer’s Association provides a voice in executive, legislative and judicial decisions for those individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as their families and caregivers. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, an estimated 5.4 million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s, and it is projected that as many as 16 million Americans will have the disease by 2050.
