State Representative Marlene Anielski (R-Walton Hills) provided sponsor testimony on House Bill 440 before the House State Government Committee this week.

House Bill 440 would designate the Saturday before Thanksgiving as “Ohio Survivors of Suicide Loss Day.”

In Ohio, on average, one person dies by suicide every six hours.  House Bill 440 would create a day, in accordance with the international and national designated dates, to recognize those Ohioans who have been affected by suicide loss.

“The legislation is a step to assist those families, friends, and loved ones who have been affected by suicide in their lives,” Rep. Anielski said.  “The public health issue of suicide, the silent epidemic, plagues our nation with no age, geographical, or socioeconomic limits.  The day will serve as a time of healing and comfort for many across our state.”

House Bill 440 awaits further hearings in the House State Government Committee.
