State Representative Marlene Anielski (R-Independence) recently attended Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare’s groundbreaking ceremony, marking a state-of-the-art facility on the current 71-acre wooded site in Sagamore Hills Township.

“The successful culmination of everyone working together at all levels made the campus atmosphere a reality,” said Rep. Anielski. “Our constituents will benefit through the efficiencies of services.”

Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare was founded in 1918 as a farm that provided dairy products, meat and produce to Cleveland State Hospital. The first building on the grounds was erected in 1923 and the hospital was opened in 1938.

In the 1990s the hospital merged with Cleveland Psychiatric Hospital and Northwest Psychiatric Hospital in Toledo to become Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare, which created a regional system for delivering mental health services. Since that time, the Toledo facility has become its own independent hospital, and maintenance of the aging Cleveland Campus building was determined to be cost prohibitive. In 2011 staff and patients were moved to the Northfield Campus in Sagamore Hills Township.
