COLUMBUS -

State Representatives Mike Dovilla (R-Berea) and Marlene Anielski (R-Walton Hills) applauded the passage of legislation from the Ohio House that names a bridge in Cuyahoga County after former Governor George Voinovich.

House Bill 22 designates the eastbound and westbound bridges that will be part of Interstate Highway 90 as the “George V. Voinovich Bridge.” The westbound portion of the bridge was named after Voinovich during the previous General Assembly, but specific legislative authority must be granted in order to name the matching eastbound bridge.

“I am honored to sponsor this legislation to honor my former boss, a mentor and friend, George Voinovich,” said Rep. Dovilla.  “During an impressive public service career that spanned 44 years, George Voinovich left an indelible mark on our hometown of Cleveland and our beloved Buckeye State.  It is particularly fitting that we are naming a bridge after a man who helped build bridges for so many Ohioans of diverse backgrounds with his people-centered style of servant leadership.  We wish the senator and his wife, Janet, all the very best for continued happiness.”

“I am pleased to joint sponsor H.B. 22 alongside Representative Dovilla to honor Senator Voinovich who has spent 44 years serving the public in various capacities,” said Rep. Anielski.

Born in Cleveland in 1936, George Voinovich’s involvement in Ohio politics dates back nearly six decades. In 1967, he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, where he served until 1971. His public service resume also includes Cuyahoga County auditor and commissioner, lieutenant governor, the mayor of Cleveland, governor, and US senator.
