State Representative Marlene Anielski (R-Independence) recently attended the honorary street naming for Pope Shenounda III.

Rep. Anielski joined City of Seven Hills officials, U.S. Senator Brown’s Office and Congresswoman Marcia Fudge in a ceremony honoring the Pope by designating McCreary Road with his holiness' honorary name, Pope Shenouda III.

The cities of Seven Hills and Cleveland were Pope Shenounda’s second homes after Alexandria, Egypt. Pope Shenounda was enthroned on November 14, 1971, becoming the 117th Pope of Alexandria, head of the Coptic Orthodox Church. He visited Cleveland and Seven Hills 32 times throughout his life. On his first visit to Cleveland in 1977, Mayor Ralph Perk hosted him at City Hall and gave him a key to the city.

“His holiness Pope Shenouda III was a prolific writer and an accomplished poet," said Rep. Anielski. "The ceremony at St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church was lovely and the opening of the Pope's museum featured his articles, artifacts and precious garments. Congratulations to the congregation and the city for a wonderful tribute."
