Rep. Romanchuk Announces House Passage Of Veterans MBR Bill
HB 488 allows veterans to transfer military experience into college credits

COLUMBUS -

State Representative Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario) announced that the Ohio House of Representatives has passed House Bill 488, the veterans portion of the Mid-Biennial Review.

“I was proud to vote for House Bill 488 to allow veterans to transfer their military experience into credit hours at state universities,” Rep. Romanchuk said. “This just makes sense and is the right thing to do.”

Among the components in the bill are provisions linking military experience and higher education. Under the bill, the Chancellor of the Board of Regents will develop standards by which a veteran’s military experience can transfer into college credits. By July 1st, 2015, state colleges and universities must comply with the Chancellor’s standards without charging a fee to a student who is a veteran for evaluating the application for college credit based on military experience.

HB 488 also features provisions regarding veterans’ rights and benefits, including speeding up the process of licensing agencies certifying applicants who are service members or veterans. To ensure that veterans can receive education benefits, the bill requires licensing agencies to apply for approval with the Ohio Department of Veterans Services.

Finally, the bill waives any fees associated with the issuing and renewing of licenses for veterans and active military members to practice pharmacy.

The bill now heads to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
