State Representative Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson) and State Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley) have introduced companion legislation that will give schools greater flexibility for barricading doors during situations such as an active shooter attack.

Specifically, the bills require the Board of Building Standards to adopt rules for the use of devices used to barricade a school door in an emergency situation. At the same time, the legislation would not allow the State Fire Code from prohibiting the use of such a device in those situations.

“It is unfortunate and tragic how many times we hear on the news about school shootings,” Rep. Roegner said. “While no single piece of legislation can guarantee against such tragedies, I believe this legislation will provide schools with extra options for protecting students, teachers and staff.”

While school districts are in constant search of enhanced safety measures, current state building code provisions prevent schools from utilizing safer, more effective strategies.

The bill, House Bill 114, which soon will be referred to a committee, has bipartisan support in the House, as Rep. Roegner is joint-sponsoring the bill with Columbus-area Democrat Heather Bishoff. Thirteen other members have also cosponsored the bill. Senator LaRose is joint-sponsoring the bill with Senator Jay Hottinger (R-Newark).
