01.08.19 - Kent Smith Sworn In As State Rep For Ohio House District 08

State Rep. Kent Smith (D–Euclid) took the oath of office today during the opening session of the 133rd Ohio General Assembly at the Ohio Statehouse, starting his third term as state lawmaker.

To begin the 133rd session of the House, Rep. Smith voted on a number of measures that allow the House to officially begin business, including the election of House Speaker Larry Householder (R-Glenford), and the approval of resolutions related to honoring the American flag during session, the creation of new House rules, and the administration of House personnel.

“While Democratic Statehouse candidates received almost 50% of the vote for seats in the 133rd General Assembly, due to partisan gerrymandering, Democrats only won 38 of 99 possible seats on November 6th.  Due to that failure of democracy in Ohio, no Democratic candidate was available for Speaker of the Ohio House,” said Rep. Smith.  “I chose to cast my vote for Rep. Larry Householder because of his public support of organized labor.  I believe the most important part of the American and Ohio economy is a healthy middle class.  Research indicates that union membership helps sustain and protect middle class wages for all families be they union members or not.  “

12.03.18 - Smith And Lepore-Hagan Seek Bond Funding For Water Infrastructure

State Reps. Michele Lepore-Hagan (D-Youngstown) and Kent Smith (D-Euclid) today urged members of the House State and Local Government Committee to take a major step toward protecting the health and safety of all Ohioans by approving House Joint Resolution (HJR) 14. The measure proposes a constitutional amendment that would generate funding for local water infrastructure projects by permitting the state to issue up to $1 billion in additional general obligation bonds.

11.28.18 - Smith Joins Democratic Lawmakers, Education Coalition Urge Suspension Of State Takeovers Of Public Schools

State Reps. Michele Lepore-Hagan (D-Youngstown), Kent Smith (D-Euclid), and Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) today joined Community Leadership Coalition on Education (CLCE) members during their legislative advocacy day urging the passage of House Bill (HB) 626, legislation to halt state takeover of public schools. CLCE is a group of advocates from Youngstown, Lorain, East Cleveland, and other communities around Ohio whose local school districts are or may soon be subject to state takeover as implemented under HB 70.

11.15.18 - Republicans Reject Democratic Push For Increased Transparency Of Taxpayer Money

State Rep. Kent Smith (D-Euclid) today responded to the Ohio House Republicans’ rejection of a Democratic amendment to increase transparency and accountability of JobsOhio, a nonprofit corporation funded by Ohio taxpayers that remains shrouded in secrecy and unbound by Ohio transparency laws.

“HB 40 would create something that already exists, it’s called the state budget and it’s available online. Instead of throwing taxpayer money around to duplicate current systems, let’s use this opportunity to increase transparency and accountability at JobsOhio, a nonprofit corporation funded by taxpayers and shrouded in secrecy,” said Smith.

Smith offered the amendment during debate on House Bill (HB) 40, a Republican-sponsored bill to create a new Ohio State Government Expenditure Database on the state treasurer’s website. The legislation specifically carves out JobsOhio to prevent public scrutiny instead of holding it to the same standard as every other state agency.

“With dozens of JobsOhio employees making six figures and Ohio’s jobs numbers lagging behind the rest of the country over the past five years, JobsOhio needs more oversight not less,” Smith said. “But time and again, the GOP has allowed JobsOhio to operate in the cloak of darkness, and that must end.”
