COLUMBUS— State Representative Juanita O. Brent (D-Cleveland) issued a statement today in anticipation of Friday’s March on Washington. This year marks the 57th anniversary of this historic event, which was first conceptualized in 1963 as a collective demonstration for economic and racial equity.

“Just like fifty-seven years ago at the original March on Washington, we are now fighting for radical changes to our economic system. We are still fighting to make the minimum wage a livable wage. All workers should feel safe and secure while at work, even in the midst of the pandemic,” said Rep. Brent. “As a nation we must acknowledge that racism is a public health crisis that affects our healthcare, workplace, education, criminal justice, police interactions, and overall community. Things have improved, but not enough to stop fighting for the original cause of the March on Washington in 1963.”

This year’s march follows months of civil unrest and advocacy for justice and equality across the country.
