State Rep. John Patterson (D-Jefferson) issued a statement in response to the death today of Ohio astronaut and U.S. Sen. John Glenn. Glenn, 95, was the first American to orbit the earth and later had a successful 25-year span of service as a U.S. Senator from Ohio.

“Senator Glenn was a hero and a role model for all. His accomplishments as both an astronaut and United States Senator are legendary and have inspired generations of Americans. I join my fellow Ohioans in commending his service to our state, and today I grieve with his friends and family, most importantly his wife of 73 years, Annie.”

Patterson’s legislation designating February 17 – Annie Glenn’s birthday – as the “Annie Glenn Communication Disorders Awareness Day” was signed into law this May. The annual recognition date will educate Ohioans about challenges faced by those with communication disorders.
