COLUMBUS- State Rep. John M. Rogers (D- Mentor-on-the-Lake) yesterday recognized the outstanding achievements of the Willoughby South High School Academic Decathlon Team that recently won the National Championship at the United State Academic Decathlon (USAD) Competition in Minneapolis.

“It is a privilege to honor these students today. They are prime examples of what can be accomplished through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence in the classroom,” said Rep. Rogers. “Their passion and love for learning is truly remarkable and I believe each of them has a very bright future. I commend this team for representing their school, their community, and their families with the highest merit. They remind us that some of the finest young minds in our country reside right here in Ohio.”

Willoughby South won the title in the medium school division and placed 8th in the overall competition.  Over 1,600 schools initially participated, which quickly narrowed down to 52 for the final round.  Several students took home individual awards as well, including Ben Thompson who won a gold medal in math, silver medals in language and science, and a bronze in social science.  Daria Soboleva took home a silver medal in music and in social science.  Students Christina Shrefler and Elissa Lawson each won silver medals in art and speech respectively.
